Overview

Field Target shooting is a precision shooting game with a spring piston or pre-charge air rifle aiming at targets of life-sized silhouettes of typical airgun quarry - rabbits, squirrels, birds, and other small game. The shooter uses estimation or the scopes parallax adjustment as a range finder tries to estimate the distance to the target and correct the scope settings to compensate for the trajectory of the lead airgun pellet or hold the scopes crosshair over or under the targets kill zone.

Shooters can use any spring or pre-charge air rifle usually of .177 caliber (other calibers can be used) not exceeding 20 foot pounds of muzzle energy. Any type of air gun, piston, PCP, CO2, rifled or smoothbore and any scope can be used. WWCCA limits the energy level at 20fpe to protect the targets. Scopes typically are of 18 to 50 power and 40-60 in aperture in size although smaller scopes can be used. See club members for recommendations and guidance since a typical match will consist of shooters using all types of air rifles and scopes.

The silhouettes (Field Targets) are typically constructed from steel and have a hole near center (Kill Zone) of varying sizes (typically 3/8 inch to 2 inches) and are placed at random distances from shooter ranging from 10-55 yards. The targets are designed not to fall unless the pellet strikes the kill zone without grazing the kill zone.

The courses are typically setup in the woods or field to simulate small game hunting environment. The courses consists of typically 10 or more lanes on which each lane will have 2-3 targets laid out at 10-55 yards from the shooter. The entire match is usually setup for 30-100 shots with 2 shots per target.

Each time the target is hit and falls over the shooter scores one point; misses count for nothing using X?s for hits and O?s for misses on the scorecard. A competitor may use any shootings position they desire unless specified, but the majority use the sitting position, drawing the legs up tight to the chest and using the knees as a stable tripod. Typically a shooter will go through the course in teams of three; one person shoots, one scores, and the third reset any fallen targets. All members of the squad shoot the lane before moving to the next station.

A match is typically divided into (2) basic classes - the piston class and open class. Any recoiling spring piston air guns can be used in the piston class or open class whereas all pre-charge air rifles are in open class. Subclasses or even the rules regarding the basic classes can be modified to meet the desires of participants, however for matches to be recognized by AAFTA they must follow AAFTA sanctioned rules and policy.
